Capodistria – Slovenia
Swiss Tourism Awards 2006
“Ancient harbour and memorable gateway to Central Europe, resort with great inclination to tourism”
Being the only commercial port and one of the oldest towns of Slovenia, a solid history, tradition and culture all rolled into one can be expected when visiting this place. At first glance, it may appear as a workaday port city but don’t let it fool you as there are a plethora of recreational areas that can make holidays highly rewarding. Despite several urbanized areas around, it has managed to preserve its compact medieval centre, which is truly worth experiencing.
The first port of call should be the Venetian-era old city which is very similar to Piran, but provides a more realist feel. From Tito Square, visitors can explore the Preatorian Palace, Campanile and Cathedral of the Assumption. There are also two main shopping centres and pizza places for everyone.
