Calheta – Portogallo

Swiss Tourism Awards 2007
“A mysterious beauty”

Significantly situated on Madeira’s south western shoreline, Calheta is the island’s main hub for vineyards, banana plantations, and sugar-cane production. Travellers also find comfort in the town as a wonderful place to stopover during a drive along the coastal road to the north. Worth-seeing landmarks include the Calheta Parish Church with a complex Moorish-style wooden ceiling, the 15th century chapel that has a Manueline south portal and patterned ceiling, the lovely Capela does Reis Magos with the interesting 16th century Flemish altar carving depicting the Adoration of the Magi and so many more that tourists will definitely find them very memorable after their visit.
