Foz do Iguaçu – Brazil

“Waterfalls, the power of water.”

Foz de Iguazu, a city located in the state of Parana on the border between Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, was honored by the Swiss Tourism Award in 2007 in a ceremony attended by local tourism board representative Paulo Nouton.

The motivation for the award (“Waterfalls, the power of water”) perfectly recalls the main feature of this location: the spectacular Iguazu Falls. The falls, which straddle the Argentine border, are protected as a National Park as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A magnificent spectacle of nature and an incredible reservoir of biodiversity, the Park was established as early as 1934 and covers an impressive 225,000 hectares, attracting large numbers of visitors from all over the world. The city’s other main attractions are also related to the natural environment that surrounds it; in fact, we have an Ecomuseum, a Zoological Garden and the Parque das Aves (Bird Park), all of which are incredible and heavenly environments for nature lovers. Another point of attraction is the Marco das Tres Fonteiras (Point of the Three Fountains), which marks the meeting point between Brazil and its two neighboring states, Argentina and Paraguay; this particular location of Foz de Iguazu deserves it the appellation, along with the corresponding cities across the border, of “Tríplice Fronteira.” The city is also home to the largest mosque on U.S. soil, the Omar Ibn Al-Khattab Mosque.
