After careful evaluation, the scientific committee of the Swiss Tourism Awards then selected the city of Calheta and awarded the prize:
Significantly located on Madeira’s southwest coast, Funchal is the island’s main center for vineyards, banana plantations, and sugar cane production. Travelers will find solace in the city as a wonderful place to stop during a walk along the coastal road to the north. Worth seeing landmarks are the Calheta parish church with a complex Moorish-style wooden ceiling, the 15th-century chapel that has a manueline south portal and decorated ceiling, the beautiful Capela si Reis Magos with the interesting 16th-century Flemish altar sculpture depicting the Adoration of the Magi, and so many others that tourists will surely find them very memorable after their visit.
